First Grade

Zeke starts first grade tomorrow. I always tell friends who have new babies to enjoy every minute because you will blink and they will be grown. Alas, it has happened again.

It seems like just a few days ago Kyle flew home from California and she, Amber, and I took the trip to Savannah to meet the new one. He was so tiny and we sat watching him sleep, looking at his angelic face...touching him, smelling him, for hours and hours. It amazed me that we could sit and watch something for eight hours and never become bored. We stayed three days. When we headed home, I knew I had left part of me behind...my blood ran through that baby's veins and that's a pretty strong feeling. And, now he is six and starting "real" school tomorrow. Time goes by so quickly.

He and Jase spent two days with me this week. We went shopping for school clothes and shoes...and anything else that he wanted. He found a tee-shirt that read, "You Can't Spell Awesome Without Me!" He wanted that (it was his favorite color blue)....and I bought it. He wanted a stuffed animal (to add to his 600+ stuffed animal collection), because he said it looked like Big. I bought that, too. He wanted McDonald's for lunch...hamburger with pickles and ketchup only, apple dippers, and chocolate milk, so we stopped at McDonald's. We went to the mall so Jason could show me how much it had deteriorated over the past few years. I hadn't been there in so long and I was shocked at the demise...but Zeke was happy going into the tropical fish store and "finding Nemo" and watching the Neon's. He wanted a UGA baseball cap, and apologized to his Dad for asking for it, but he got that, as well. (His Dad is a Florida Gator fan). He and his Dad had their photos taken in one of the kiosk's. I went to Kroger to buy groceries while Jase and Zeke went on a journey to find new Transformers (they found two new ones that Zeke didn't have), and then we came home, cooked out...and played tee-ball until dark bid us goodnight. Zeke's left handed...until he bats. He can bat as well right handed as he can left handed which amazes me. He just picks up the bat, switches hands, changes his stance, and swings. Right or left...it doesn't matter...he knocks it over the fence (or rather into the creek at our house). Only thing is, he doesn't care about sports. He likes music and drawing and animals and video games and challenges and math and reading.

Yes, this little one is starting first grade tomorrow. Thing is...I can still sit and watch him sleep for hours and hours. It amazes me how angelic a child's face becomes when they sleep...even if they're six years old.
