From the mind of a child...........
Zeke spent 4 days with us...he was to have spent a week, or more, but things happen when there is custody sharing between parents. To be honest - I was just glad to have the four days as it had been almost two months since I had seen him.
Seven year olds see things much differently than 54 year olds (or 44 year olds or 34 year olds or 24 year olds for that matter).
1. Seven year olds do not care what they look like when they go shopping. They have no measurement as to what "looks good on them," "nor how they're presented to the world." They simply do not care if their clothes match, if their hair is brushed, nor what other's think of them. In fact, they don't even see "others." 200 people in the store and their only focus is finding the psp game aisle and the lego station. Lesson learned.
2. Seven year olds aren't impulsive buyers. If they do not want something they simply say, "I don't want that." I was amazed - I was from the belief that everyone wanted everything - but not so for a seven year old. From his eyes - if you don't need it - you don't buy it. Lesson learned.
3. Seven year olds aren't 'picky' eaters - they just have simple tastes. Zeke and I walked around the grocery and I suggested food after food and his response was always - "no thanks." Candy? "No thanks." Sugar laden cereal? "No thanks." Cookies? "No thanks." Chips? "No thanks." The kid likes bacon and eggs for breakfast, tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch, and mac and cheese for dinner. After trying to sway his diet for three days...I realized he isn't being picky...he just knows what he wants. Lesson learned.
4. Seven year olds are smarter than most adults. When I asked Zeke if he was excited about our upcoming vacation (to Disney World) he said, "yes...I am...but you need a vacation, too... from the TV and your computer." WOW. Lesson learned.
5. Seven year olds are our teachers. The last night of Zeke's visit we went outside, took the dogs so they could play, and spent two hours catching lightening bugs and just laughing and talking. I asked him what was the best part of his visit.......was it eating ice cream in bed? "No," he replied. Was it having a backwards day and eating dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner? "No," he replied. Was it getting to play psp any time he wanted? "No," he replied. Well...was it getting to stay up as late as he wanted...or buying new toys? "No," he replied. We sat in silence for a few minutes before he said, "this is it." I asked..."what's it?" He said, "This is it Grandma Robin...this is my favorite part of the visit...just sitting here and talking with you...this is my favorite part." Lesson learned!
