Julie & Julia
I became fascinated with the Julie blog after "D" day and have watched Julie & Julia ten times. There's only so much you can do in a day when you don't want to do....anything...so I decided to cook. Julia, on her French Cooking show, made proscuttio florintine puffed pastry with 'swiss' not 'parmesan' cheese. I decided to tackle that sans proscuttio. I do not like proscuttio ham. To me it tastes like watered down meat slime. I guess I have no Italian blood in my veins. I made it with bacon and it was still delicious!
I made shrimp (prawn) florintine, and learned that anytime florintine is listed in the recipe it means it has spinach in the dish, mixed with caramelized onions and sauteed mushrooms then tossed with an alfredo sauce (which is made with parmesan cheese) over homemade basil noodles.
I made a simple meatloaf...well not so simple...it has a French name that I can't remember....where you mix sirloin beef with sauteed onions and green peppers and sun dried tomatoes... add a generous helping of sauteed mushrooms...then mix those ingredients with worcestershire an egg and garlic bread crumbs....then bake. That dish..........was to die for.
Fried okra.......the trick she says is to beat an egg into a bowl and pour in a cup of buttermilk. Cut the okra into 1/4 or 1/2 inch pieces and let the pieces soak in the buttermilk mixture for at least 30 minutes. Then remove the pieces of okra with a slotted spoon and dredge (don't you love the word dredge) them in a mixture of 1/2 flour and 1/2 cornmeal. Then...put them in a skillet simmering with hot oil until the crust browns. That was the best fried okra I've ever eaten!
So last night I looked at Don and saw his stomach and asked, "Did my cooking do that to you?" He said, "Yes...and it did 'that' to you," pointing at mine. So I'm gonna give up on the cooking shows and start watching "Flip This House," or "Clean My Nest," or something. But we had a good ride while it lasted!
